I am an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Virginia.
I received my Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago in 2007. I was previously a
postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Pacific Rim, University of San Francisco
and at the National University of Singapore's Asia Research Institute.
My sociological interests include culture, gender, religion, and politics. My current research examines
how transnational processes affect women and possibilities for social change. I am now working
on a book manuscript about women activists, Islam, and feminism in Indonesia.
During the 2011-2012 academic year, I am a visiting professor in sociology
and women's studies at the University of Michigan.
I have lived and traveled in Southeast Asia and East Africa, and have written for
magazines, websites, and newspapers. My documentary, "Division + Western," was shown on
WTTW Chicago public television and screened at a number of film festivals.
